about

The Afrikan Hiphop Caravan is an annual project run by grassroots Hiphop Activist Networks spread across the continent and the Afrikan diaspora. Its vision is to build a strong and united Afrikan Hiphop Movement and its mission is to establish a cohesive network of Afrikan Hiphop Collectives with strong ties to like-minded organisations worldwide.

The 2015 edition occured to a backdrop of increased police brutality against Africans in America and xenophobic violence against Africans in South Africa and Mozambique. Once again the Hiphop community globally is being challenged to confront the living ghost of racism and the phantom of Afrikan self-hate.

At same time Hiphop activists in Angola have been detained by authorities for their work in advancing freedom of expression, freedom of association and freedom of assembly.

In Zimbabwe the abduction and continued disappearance of activist Itai Dzamara has prompted renewed calls for freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

Moreover, across the continent poor and working people are struggling to survive under harsh economic policies. Thus, this project seeks explore ways of uniting working class communities against self-hate and institutionalised racism, preserving Hiphop activists’ freedom of expression, association and assembly, and mapping out ways of sustaining community livelihoods through Hiphop activism.
